STUDY GUIDE REVIEW
The multiple–choice section counts for 45% percent of
your total grade on the exam.If you answer a question incorrectly or leave it
blank there is no penalty given to you. There are between 45 to 60 questions on
four or five prose and poetry passages. You are allowed 1 hour to answer these
questions. The prose passages usually
comes works of fiction, nonfiction or drama. The poetry passages can come from
different time periods and can be in different styles and forms.
Annotating the passage by underlining, circling or
highlighting the text while you read is
very helpful in answering multiple choice questions. annotating key ideas in
the passage helps you better understand the passage.annotating the text makes
it easier to not waste time while looking back to answer a question. You should
also annotate literary elements such as diction, tone, symbolism, time and etc.
Do not annotate a lot in the passage because it will be difficult to find what
you need. Use all the information provided to you about the passage such as the
title, author, date of publication, and footnotes. Be cognizant of foreshadow. Before reading a passage
check if any questions ask you to refer to specific sentences and underline,
circle or highlight them.
Before
answering the questions, you should read carefully to look for the key words
needed such as All, Except, and None. Readers might get confused on whether they are looking for the right
answer or wrong answer so rereading the questions surely would alleviate any
confusion.
After finishing the
multiple choice, you should carefully skim through the questions and make sure
you followed the directions told to you to avoid erroneous mistakes caused by
reading quickly. Moreover, it would be a good decision to underline any words
that are completely capitalized so it would be emphasized to you when reading
the questions after the passage.
Since it is a section for
multiple choice, AP test takers have a much higher chance of guessing the
correct answer even without fully understanding the question. Eliminate the answer
choices that seem totally irrelevant to the passage and the question at hand.
(There are usually two multiple choice questions on the AP Exam that are
totally irrelevant).Usually when the question is a line-reference question, the
answer choice will be the same as the line, but just rearranged differently in
the answer choices. For example if the line reference said “Lebron James is
considered to be one of the greatest players to ever play in the NBA” then the
answer choice would be along the lines of
“The zenith of NBA players is contemplated to have Lebron James in it.”

When you are reading a passage make sure to key in on different
literary techniques such as diction and tone that the author utilizes to
enhance the text and how they affect characters. These key elements ultimately
have unique effects on the passage as a whole. Focus on shifts and changes in
the perspective of the author as you try to divulge the points in the text.
This allows you to answer questions about the point of view of the author with
ease and helps you comprehend the author’s thoughts/ideas. Symbolism is also
effective in helping you show the purpose of the passage (author’s purpose).
Symbols sometimes represent the theme in a passage as a whole. It can also give
you an idea of what the main idea of the text is or the meaning of a title. Compare
and Contrast is very important to look for in the text and finding the
differentiating the two is equally significant. You may believe that the
author’s purpose is one thing when I tactually could be the opposite. Literary
elements can help you compare and contrast as well.(Simile & Metaphors).
